Handyman Mike

My name is Mike Wilmot and I have over 13 years experience in a range of practical industries, including the construction industry and the paint/coatings industry. I left school and followed my father's footsteps by heading straight into a carpentry apprenticeship with Barratt Homes, which was the start of my experience in the construction industry. Later on, I worked for Heritage Bathrooms, where I spent 2 years doing joinery and fitting.

From 2004-2007, I worked as a lab technician at Syntema South West - a company specialising in industrial surface coatings. My role involved colour matching paints and stains, spraying surfaces, on-site colour adjustment and technical support, and I also carried out all general upkeep and repairs. During my time at Syntema, I learnt a huge amount about wood finishing and restoration techniques, as well as becoming proficient at paint spraying and finishing practically any surface.

I've probably gained as much experience outside of work as I have done through work, both from working with people like Dad on different carpentry jobs and from learning and praticing skills in my spare time, through being generally interested in them.

My name is Ken Wilmot and I have over 40 years experience in the construction industry as a carpenter. When I left school, I moved straight into a carpentry apprenticeship with Cowlin Construction and, having qualified, went on to spend the next 32 years working in many different jobs, both as a carpenter and as a project manager.

These jobs have included working on large sites, such as the second Severn Crossing (where I was a chargehand in the marine construction section) and large supermarket construction sites, all over the country. Additionally, I did lots of work at the University of Bristol in my earlier years as a carpenter, which included hanging doors in some of the older University buildings and helping to build the staircase in the Student Union building.

From 1995 until early 2007, I was working at Heritage Bathrooms, mainly doing cabinet-making and bathroom fitting, whilst still fitting kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms for friends and family in my spare time and, more recently, helping Mike out on weekends with various jobs. Mike and I have always worked well together as a team and so when the opportunity for us to work together again in 2007, due to the success of his Handyman Mike business, I was delighted.
